Harriet Beecher Stowe wintered in Florida and purchased thirty acres in Mandarin, Florida on the banks of the St. John’s River. She shipped oranges up north from her groves  with success.  She established the first “Freedmans Bureau” and  raised funds for the construction of the “Church of our Savior” complete with a Tiffany window.
